Brea, Calif. – June 7, 2010 – Rockstar Makita Suzuki’s Tommy Hayden scored a hard-earned win on Sunday during the second race of the Road America doubleheader in Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin. Hayden now leads the AMA American SuperBike class in points after being in second place since the first race of the season. His consistency on the track and his exemplary racing talent put him at the top of the series at the halfway point of the season.
Hayden started the day off on Sunday hoping to be on the winning end of the battle after narrowly missing the win in a photo finish on Saturday. Hayden and his crew made very minor changes to their Rockstar Makita Suzuki GSX-R1000 for Sunday, and after a short practice session you could tell Hayden had the utmost confidence in his race machine. “My bike was setup well and I thought I’d have that little extra advantage today,” Hayden said. “It feels good to be on the winning end of the battle today.” Hayden pulled away from the pack in a two-man fight for the lead early in the race and stayed in second place for most of the race. He was patient and calculating, and made a prime move near the end of the race. On the last turn before the finish line, Hayden twisted the throttle of his GSX-R1000 and took it across the finish line first. Hayden has been second in the points chase since the first race of the season, but with Sunday’s amazing victory, he is now atop the leader board. “As much as I’d like to be 60 points ahead and cruise to the end of the season,” Hayden said, “I think being close in points helps the series and makes it more interesting. We’ve put together a good bike and I feel good about the rest of the season.”
His teammate Blake Young started off the front row of the grid on Saturday hoping to improve on his third-place finish on Saturday. After the two leaders pulled away from the pack, Young pushed hard to catch up all while battling other racers. Young fought hard but ended up in seventh overall after a bobble mid-race. Young is still fourth in overall points and is looking forward to the next round of racing at Mid-Ohio July 16-18.
The GSX-R1000 was on the podium four times this weekend at Road America. Hayden and Young finished 2-3, respectively, on Saturday. With Hayden’s win on Sunday and the third-place finish of Jake Zemke aboard his National Guard Jordan Suzuki, the GSX-R1000 earned more points than any other motorcycle in the AMA American SuperBike class. Look for the GSX-R to dominate once again at Round 6 of the series in Lexington, Ohio.

Both racers felt confident that they could do well at the track, and they proved to be right after an amazing race on Saturday. Hayden finished second and Young took the third-place spot on the podium.
“I have some ideas for a few little changes in bike setup for Sunday,” Hayden said. “Hopefully that will give me the little bit of an advantage I need to get out front.” Hayden finished in second place, but it was a photo finish. He came across the finish line one one-hundredth of a second behind the racer who was awarded the first-place trophy. “The track was just a little bit too long for me today,” Hayden said after the race. “This is the third time this year I’ve been on the backend of a close finish. I have some ideas on what we can change for tomorrow to make sure we’re on the winning end.” Hayden started the day off second on the starting grid after a very successful qualifying session Saturday morning. He and his crew have his GSX-R1000 set up very well, and it showed on the track that Hayden has confidence in his race bike.
Blake Young also qualified and put himself in a great starting position, taking the third spot on the front of the grid. Young wanted to win at Road America on Saturday because it’s considered his hometown race and he has many fans. “It’s hard to be in front of my hometown crowd and come in third,” Young said. “I’m going to try really hard to win for the fans here tomorrow. We’ll make some tweaks and come back at it tomorrow ready to get up front.”
Tommy Hayden is still second in overall points in the AMA American SuperBike series, and only three points out of the lead. Blake Young is currently in fourth overall, and both racers will be vying to earn more points on the amazing Road America track.
